UBC School of Nursing

CIES facilitated a partnership between the UBC School of Nursing and the Guru Nanak College of Nursing from 1998 to 2007.  The partnership aimed to enhance BSc. Nursing education at GN College in a spirit of mutual exchange and learning.  It involved exchange visits of both Canadian and Indian faculty members and students as well as faculty development activities. UBC School of Nursing offered practical assistance with development of nursing labs and library resources, for example, and visiting faculty conducted research seminars and participated in GN College faculty meetings.

UBC School of Nursing also provided important support for the activities of a primary health care project sponsored by CIES from 2001 to 2005. Members of the School’s Guru Nanak Advisory Committee provided advice to CIES on matters of overall project planning, proposal development, monitoring and evaluation. UBC nursing faculty and students who visited during this period often spent time with the project team at Dhahan-Kaleran and accompanied them on visits to the villages. UBC students had opportunities to see PHC in action in rural communities and to gain an introductory understanding of the context for health care and nursing in Punjab.
