Help patients in rural Punjab regain their sight
Give elderly people independence and freedom
Relieve the burden of family care in rural Punjabi communities
Allow elderly to participate in family productivity
Some background:
- Support goes directly to patients of Guru Nanak Mission Hospital in Dhahan-Kaleran, Punjab, India
- Guru Nanak Mission Hospital is a not-for-profit, rural hospital with a qualified ophthalmologist. Cataracts surgeries are offered for free.
- Surgery with medication costs approximately $145 – $175 CAD for each eye (depending on patient needs).
- Many low-income jobs in rural India involve outdoor work, exacerbating the problem of cataracts in the area.*
- Public health care is under-resourced in India. Most people rely on private hospitals for treatment.
- Guru Nanak Mission Hospital supplies approximately 800 free cataract surgeries per year. Priority is given to low-income patients.
